Biography

Giuseppa di Miceli, daughter of Giuseppe di Miceli, misuratore (surveyor), and Caterina Salemi, is born on 2 April 1851 in her parents' home on via San Giuliano in Corleone.[1]

She marries Giacomo Riina, son of Felice Riina and the late Caterina Fratello, on 31 January 1869.[2]

See also: Gioachino (Giacomo) Riina, married to Carmela Rumore.

Giuseppa and Giacomo have at least ten children: Caterina (1871), Maria (1879), Giuseppe/Joseph (1883), Sadie (c. 1887), Bernarda/Bessie (1888), Gaetano (c. 1889), and Giovanna/Jennie (1891). (Three are not yet known by name, but from the 1910 census, when Giuseppa says she has had ten children, seven living.)

Caterina is born and baptized 30 October 1871. Her godparents are Maestro Rosolino lo Curto and Lucia Riina, a married couple.[3]

Maria is born 23 December 1879 in Corleone and baptized the next day. Her godparents are Gioachino Riina and Lucia Cannaliato, a married couple.[4] Giacomo and Maria's godfather are first cousins.

Giuseppe is born 1 March 1883, according to the record of his death.

Sadie is known from census records.

Bernarda is born in October 1888.[5]

According to Critchley, Gaetano is born 1889 in Corleone to Giacomo Riina and Carmela Rumore. No matching baptismal record has been found so far. He also calls Bernarda Riina, who marries Gaetano's criminal associate, Vincenzo Terranova, Gaetano's sister. Records confirm Bernarda's parents are Giacomo and Giuseppa.

Caterina marries Bernardo di Miceli on 29 October 1890. Their marriage record contains a dispensation due to second degree consanguinity in the maternal line. The witnesses are Don Michaelangelo Zabbia and Pietro Cutrera.[6] Caterina and Bernardo are first cousins, once removed.

Giovanna is born and baptized 26 June 1891. Her godfather is Giovanni di Palermo.[7]

In 1896, Giacomo and two of the children, Maria and Giuseppe, emigrate together to New York City.[8]

In the 1905 New York state census of Manhattan, “Jacoma” Reina, age 62 (b. 1843), who owns a tobacco factory, heads a household at 334 East 106th St. with his wife “Joseph”, 52 (b. 1853), and children Joe, 22 (b. 1883), a barber, Sadie, 18 (b. 1887), cigar maker, Bessie, 17 (b. 1888), who works at sewing, and Jennie, 13 (b. 1891), at school. All members of the family were born in Italy. Giacomo has been in the US for 9 years; so has Joe (imm. 1896). His wife has been in the US for 8 years (imm. 1897), older daughters for 7 (imm. 1898), and youngest for 5 (imm. 1900).[9]

Most of the family's ages are underreported by about two years in the 1910 census:

In the 1910 federal census of Manhattan, Ward 12, Giacomo Reina, 65 (b. 1845), heads a household at 239 106th St. with his wife, Giuseppa, 58 (b. 1852), and children Joseph, 25 (b. 1885), Sadie, 21 (b. 1889), Bessie, 19 (b. 1891), and Jennie, 17 (b. 1893). All members of the family were born in Italy. Giuseppa has had ten children, seven living. They have been married for 41 years (m. 1869). Giacomo and Joseph emigrated in 1896, and the rest of the family came in 1900. Giacomo is a wholesale dealer in oil, working on his own account. Joseph is a barber, also self-employed. Sadie is employed as a cigar maker, and Bessie and Jennie are dressmakers.[10]

In 1910, Giacomo testifies on behalf of Giuseppe Morello, on trial for counterfeiting. His future son-in-law, Vincenzo Terranova, is Giuseppe's half-brother and criminal associate.

Bernarda marries Vincenzo Terranova on 23 July 1913 in New York.[11] This source calls her the sister of Gaetano, founder of the Lucchese crime family in New York.[12] This source confirms Bernarda's parents as Giacomo and Giuseppa.[13]

Giuseppe, a chiropodist, marries Rosa lo Bello on 12 April 1917 in Manhattan.[14]

Giacomo, age 76 (b. 1844), dies 12 July 1920 in Manhattan.[15]

The NYC Municipal Archives record of her death on 11 March 1924 also calls Bernarda's parents Giacomo Riina and Josephine Di Miceli.[16]

On the evening of February 26, 1930, Gaetano is shot in the head with a double barrel shotgun, on Sheridan Avenue in the Claremont section of the Bronx. He is killed instantly.[17]

Giuseppe dies 16 November 1944 in Manhattan.[18]
